(HT 0-0)

Alcester RFC

Bromyard 11 – 17 Alcester

Alcester extended their unbeaten run to four games on Saturday with a 17-11 victory away at Bromyard.

The Herefordshire side are the first team to have gained a point against Alcester this season, securing a losing bonus point in the final seconds of the game.

It was also the home side that took the early lead in the game, slotting over a penalty kick that was awarded for a deliberate knock on.

However, the league leaders looked sharp and were slowly chipping away at the Bromyard defence and you could tell that points were soon to be on the board for the red and blacks.

After fifteen minutes of play, front rower Kyran Flynn powered over the line to put his side ahead. The conversion was the narrowest bit wide.

Ten minutes later, Oscar Holland, who was on as substitute for an injured Jamie Harland, helped make a real impact in his last game for the club before moving away for work. Holland set free through the centre before drawing the last defender and offloading to Mark Burrell to score on the wing. The conversion was successful.

From the restart, Alcester switched off momentarily in defence and Bromyard caught them off guard to claw a try back but the visitors held on to a narrow lead into the break 8-12.

The second half started with high levels of passion and intensity as Alcester dug deep to keep their unbeaten run whilst Bromyard were keen to put on a display on their Vice President’s day.

Substitute second row, Lewis Wright showed a turn of pace and made a dash for the line. His efforts were deemed to be held up and the visitors appeals for a high tackle in the process were dismissed.

Another effort by Alcester was then knocked on over the line, as they searched for another try to add a safety net between them and their opposition.

Both sides were plagued by knock ons in crucial moments of the game, before frustrations spilled over into a scuffle on the try line which resulted in a yellow card being shown to a member from each side.

Spurred on by the incident, Alcester reacted first and Max Biltcliffe secured his side’s third try as the game approached its closing stages.

There was enough time left for Bromyard to be awarded a penalty which they kicked successfully to bring them within seven points of Alcester’s score and gain a losing bonus point from the game.

Alcester sit in second place after the game, just being pipped to the top spot by Old Wheatleyans on points difference. The two teams meet at the end of October but before then, Alcester look ahead to Burbage this Saturday on their Vice President’s day. The second team also welcome Shottery to Kings Coughton
