Alcester 2nd XV 31 Bromyard 2nd XV 36
A threadbare Alcester 2nd XV gave an extremely good account of themselves, to run the visitors very close, despite playing the whole game a man down.
Alcester were still frantically sorting their side out in the run up to kick off and managed to muster fourteen players and playing with the slope at their back in the first half, actually took an early lead. Veteran scrum half, Robbie Parker, back again for yet another campaign in red and black, showed his trademark quick turn of foot to race clear of the Bromyard defence, before feeding centre Harry Wylie to open the scores. Luke Spencer added the conversion.
The visitors began to use their huge weight advantage in the forwards to good effect and with a regular supply of ball Bromyard scored two quick tries to lead 12-7 with only twelve minutes gone.
Midway through the half another break from Wylie, playing his first rugby in almost three years, allowed him to return the favour and provide the assist to Parker, who was up in support, to level the scores.
The visitors once again used their extra man to good effect to retake the lead, before man of the match Wylie scored his second, which Spencer converted, to once again tie the scores up at 19-19.
When the visitors fly half try a little chip over Alcester’s advancing defensive line, it was smartly gathered in mid-air by his opposite number, James Roberts, who raced clear to give his side a 24-19 half time lead.
Now with the benefit of the slope, it was no surprise when Bromyard’s dominant pack scored a push over try from a scrum, before the visitors added their fifth try to lead 24-31.
Wylie, the most powerful runner on the pitch, scored his hat trick, and Spencer once again converted to level the scores again, before injuries took their toll on the home side and when they were reduced to twelve men, Bromyard closed the game out with one final converted try and a scoreline of 31-38.
This was a valiant effort by Alcester who will be hoping to add to their numbers before they welcome Chaddersley Corbett on Saturday, for another league game, kicking off at 3pm.
