Bromyard 26 Alcester 31
A last play of the game try from Josh O’Connor, made it two wins from two for Alcester in the early season league table.
At what has become a difficult place for Alcester to get results over the years, the home side had the better of the opening exchanges and moved into a 12-0 lead, but the visitors got a foot hold in the game and in the run up to half time, number 8 Lewis Wright powered over for the visitor’s first score, which the returning Ed Gough converted to leave the half time score at 12-7.
Alcester had to cope with a period with fourteen men, after prop Dev Jacobs was yellow carded for not rolling away at a ruck, but they stuck to their task and further tries from skipper Ieuan Hopkin and scrum half Rich Udall and a conversion from Gough, actually levelled the scores at 19-19, as by then the home side had also scored again.
Wright scored his second try, which again Gough converted, but the try scorer had to leave the field later with a shoulder injury.
Bromyard hit back to level the scores at 26-26 with Josh O’Connor in the sin bin, but when O’Connor returned, he proved to be the match winner in the dying seconds of the game. After a period of sustained forward pressure near the home line, the ball was sent wide to Alcester’s powerful outside centre and he scored out wide to seal the win.
This was a pleasing, and up until now all too rare victory in Herefordshire for Alcester who now turn their attention to Saturday’s local derby and a first ever league meeting with Stratford. Kick off at Pearcecroft is 3pm.
