Alcester 2nd XV’s visit to Coventry survived the weather conditions, and the visitors narrowly missed out on completing a league double over their opponents, despite an impressive fight back from 24-0 down.
Coventrians started the game with a much sharper and direct approach. For the first twenty five minutes there was only one team in the contest. Alcester conceded four tries, and at 24-0 it was looking like a difficult afternoon ahead, but the visitors fought their way back into the game, growing in confidence and strength.
The men in red and black managed to claw a try back on the stroke of half time with Toby Birks combining with his brother Noah who finished in the corner.
At 24-7 and Alcester now in the ascendency, it was set to be an entertaining second half.
Further tries from Pav Sembakuttige and Rich Beddard brought Alcester within striking distance, and with Archie Beddard’s 100% kicking success off the tee, the score line was narrowed to 24-21.
A chaotic final ten minutes had both teams on edge, but unfortunately for Alcester the game ended with Coventrians holding on for a narrow, hard fought win.
The man of the match accolade went jointly to Toby Birks and Rich Beddard for their outstanding contributions.
Alcester 2nds are next in action when they welcome third placed Harbury 2nd XV to Kings Coughton on 28th February.
