7 - 29

(HT 0-0)

Old Saltleians RFC

Alcester 2nd XV 7 Old Saltelians 2nd XV 29

Alcester lost out to the visitors in a hard-fought contest played in extremely wet conditions throughout.

The source of the Old Salts victory came through their bigger and well drilled pack, who dominated proceedings throughout and restricted Alcester possession.

The home side started with the slope at their back, but they fell behind early on after the visitors’ pressure forced a penalty that was converted. Moments later, Old Salts extended their lead with their first converted try after a series of pick and go drives from ruck ball, by their forwards.

Alcester were having to rely on scraps but when they did get the ball, they looked dangerous. No 8 Morgan O’Dell made good progress with ball in hand, and splintered the visitors defence with a powerful run. When he was finally stopped by the Old Salts defence, the ball was moved quickly through the hands wide to Lewis Walker who crossed for a try. Full back Archie Beddard converted, to leave the half time score at 10-7 in the visitors favour.

With the slope at their back in the second half, Old Salts continued to have the upper hand in possession and with injuries taking their toll for Alcester, it was a brave rear guard effort throughout the half.

The visitors crossed for three more tries and a fully deserved 29-7 victory.

For Alcester skipper Luke Spencer nominated second row, James Hibbard as his man of the match, whilst prop Alec Aulcott was another one who put in a big shift.

Alcester continue in league action next weekend when they visit unbeaten league leaders, Newbold on Avon 2nd XV. Kick-off is 2.15pm.
