Alcester 2nd XV 50 Coventrians 12
Alcester 2nds returned to winning ways with a comprehensive victory, although this match was played as a friendly, with the home side lending players to the visitors who arrived short for the league fixture and actually conceded the game before kick-off, which meant that in league terms Alcester were awarded a home walk over.
Both sides were keen to get a game on, however, and Alcester were grateful to their opponents for travelling to make a game of it, which was more competitive than the score line suggests for long periods of the game.
Playing up the slope in the first half, it didn’t take long for the home side to claim the ascendancy and debutant, Archie Beddard, crossed for the opening try which he converted himself, his first points of a personal 20 points haul in a man of the match performance.
The visitors hit straight back before Freddie White extended Alcester’s lead with a break away try, which Beddard again converted.
Scrum half Rich Udall added a third try for Alcester midway through the half, which Beddard converted before James Lampitt scored his side’s fourth try, which Beddard made it four from four conversions afterwards.
Skipper Luke Spencer added another try, before the break, for a 33-5 half time lead.
Bolstered by Alcester stalwart and life member, Robbie Parker, playing for them in the second half, the visitors scored first with a converted try, before Freddie White scored his second try for Alcester and Beddard added another conversion.
Pav Sembakuttige scored a fine individual try from range after racing past several defenders, which Beddard again converted as the visitors’ heads began to drop and tired legs started to take their toll.
The captains agreed to call the game early just after the hour mark, but there was still time for Beddard to add a well struck penalty to make the 50-point mark for Alcester.
Alcester are next in action on 8th November when they visit Harbury for another league fixture.
