(HT 7-14)

Alcester RFC

Alcester claimed a first ever league victory at Ledbury, completing the season double over their opponents in the process to maintain second position in the league table.

An injury and availability hampered side made the journey to Herefordshire, and they fell behind to Ledbury scoring with the game’s first try which was converted, before the visitors’ hit back through a try by Will Silk which was converted by skipper Ed Gough.

Man of the match Jamie Harland, scored his side’s second try with one of a number of lengthy runs during the game, which Gough again converted for a 14-7 lead for Alcester at the break.

No 8 Lewis Wright scored the first try of the second half to put the red and blacks 21-7 in front after Gough’s conversion, before the home side hit back with their second score, to narrow the deficit back to seven points again.

James Lampitt scored Alcester’s fourth and bonus point try, out wide, before Wright scored his second try to leave Alcester 31-14 up inside the final quarter of the game.

Ledbury scored their second converted try, before they were reduced to fourteen men, but this didn’t stop them from scoring again five minutes afterwards to bring the scoreline to 21-31.

With the home side on top, it was Alcester’s turn to play a man down, when lock Morgan O’Dell was singled out for his side’s totting up of infringements. Ledbury crossed for a try again to move back within a score, to make for a nervy ending, but the game ended with the visitors in possession to close out an excellent win.

This was a really good performance from a changed side, where everyone stood up. Veteran lock James Hibbard, made his first 1st XV start of the season, filling in for the absences, and acquitting himself extremely well.

Alcester host Leamington in what is their final home league game of the season on Saturday, kicking off at 3pm.
