Alcester RFC

38 - 12

(HT 0-0)

Camp Hill RFC

Alcester claimed their first ever league win over Camp Hill, a victory that sees them leap frog the Shirley based side into second place in the league.

Playing with the slope at their back in the first half, the visitors dominated the opening exchanges and took the lead after five minutes with a converted try.

Alcester hit back midway through the half through Lewis Wright who broke three tackles on his way to the line following a typically powerful run. Ed Gough converted.

Shortly afterwards Camp Hill came close to regaining the lead with a drop goal and Alcester were dealt an injury below when full back Oscar Holland had to leave the field with a head injury. He was replaced by Alex Chiles in a reshuffle which saw Jamie Harland move to full back.

On the half hour mark, the home side lost second row Nigel Burrows to the sin bin, but his absence didn’t impact Alcester’s increasing domination and prop Ieuan Hopkin span out of tackle to give his side the lead, which Gough also converted.

Just before the break, Lewis Walker scored his side’s third try, to help his side to a 19-7 lead at half time.

Jamie Harland scored Alcester’s bonus point try early in the second half, which Gough converted, before the visitors enjoyed a period of possession near the home line, but Alcester held out and when Camp Hill were reduced to fourteen men after a yellow card, the home side capitalised with another try and a second for Ieuan Hopkin for a 31-7 lead.

With their numbers restored, Camp Hill hit back with their second try, before a second yellow card for the previously sin binned player led to a red card for him, which meant the visitors were forced to play the rest of the game with fourteen men.

Substitute, Jack Green completed the scoring in the last play of the game, with Gough again successfully converting.

This was a big win in front of another well attended touchline. They are in action again on Saturday when they visit local rivals, Droitwich, for a 2.15pm kick off.

Harry Wright – Alcester RFC

Former Alcester junior, Harry Wright, who got picked up by the academy system aged 16, has just returned from a training camp with England under 20s, having been selected for the under 20s Six Nations squad by coach Andy Titterrell.

Wright, who made his England under 18 debut last season, and played for England under 19s against Wales just before Christmas, signed professional terms with Gloucester last year.

His family connections to Alcester remain as his elder brother, Lewis, scored in Alcester’s 1st XV win over Camp Hill at the weekend, while Harry will find out later in the month, whether he will make the Six Nations line up, ahead of England under 20s opener against Wales at Northampton’s Franklins Gardens on Friday 6th February, kick off 7.45pm.
