Alcester came within the width of a goal post in avenging a heavy defeat earlier in the season in the reverse fixture but in the end had to settle for a hard-fought draw.
In a game that was keenly contested but fair throughout and was a great advert for occasional and veteran’s rugby, it was the visitors, playing down the slope in the first half, that took the lead with an opening try before doubling their tally shortly afterwards following a speculative kick through and them winning the chase to the loose ball.
Turning around 12-0 behind at the break, and having lent players to their opponents throughout the game, Alcester made changes at half time to ensure that everyone from the squad of twenty-two players, had game time in home colours.
With the slope at their backs now, the home side began to get on top, but they struggled to pierce a determined defence and despite plenty of possession were being turned over far too often.
With only seven minutes to go, Alcester finally made the break through when man of the match, Anthony Blondel crashed over from his centre position and Glyn Smith added the conversion.
The home side continued to pile the pressure on in the remaining minutes of the game. Prop Alec Aucott came close to levelling the scores when he was just forced into touch as he drove for the line, but skipper Sam Fell managed to drive his way over, under pressure, for his side’s second try. Glyn Smith struck his kick well but the wind just took it left and it smacked against the left hand upright, to leave the scoreline level at the end of the game.
Alcester 3rds are next in action on 15th February when they host Leamington.
