Southam 2nds 12-46 Alcester 2nds
Alcester’s 2nd XV travelled to Southam with a strong squad to start their 24/25 season league campaign.
The opposition team were short of players on the day, so with numbers to spare, Alcester loaned two players in each half to ensure a competitive 15-a-side game could go ahead.
From the kick off Alcester looked lively and threatening, but fumbled some early chances. After some time to settle, the men in red and black became far more clinical and started to turn the screw.
Alcester’s set piece demonstrated a significant improvement from last season, being dominant in every scrum despite being the smaller pack. A fine team display saw tries coming from all over the park, 8 in total. Luke Spencer, Pavan Sembakuttige, Jimmy Watson, Che Mathews, Morgan Odell, AJ Bennett, Freddie White and Harry Roderick all dotting the ball down.
The player of the match was awarded to Che Mathews, who made an immediate impact off the bench, scoring under the posts within 30 seconds of coming on.
The result was a morale-boosting win away from home and has set the tone nicely for Alcester’s next fixture at home to local rivals Shottery.
